Since its founding in 1255 until the end of World War II Kaliningrad, formerly Königsberg, has played a major role in German history because of its port and as a centre of academic excellence. Today Kaliningrad is a combination of modern Russia and traditional European culture.

The Cathedral with the tomb of philosopher Immanuel Kant shows seven centuries of German history and has recently been restored after 50 years in ruins from bombing in 1944. Toady it is a cultural centre comprising a Kant and the Cathedral museum plus chapels of the three Christian confessions: orthodox, evangelical and catholic.

Another interesting sight is the Amber Museum located in an old fortress, which was part of the medieval city wall.

The museum is unique and contains fragments of the famous Amber Room from the Winter Palace in St. Petersburg.

The Museum of the World Ocean and Botanical Garden are some more of Kaliningrad’s impressive sights.
