Foreigners familiar with English will find the Latvian language very peculiar. First of all, one word can cover several meanings, and secondly, every single word changes ending depending on context…Even numbers and names will change forms.

Latvian is the official state language of Latvia and is spoken by about 1,4 million native speakers. Most Latvians speak Russian, and as a visitor you will be able to communicate in English and German.

The Latvian alphabet has 33 letters and you pronounce every letter in a word. Furthermore, the first syllable of the word is stressed. There is no use of article, but instead 2 genders and 7 cases to put the words in.

Latvian is part of the Eastern Baltic group of Indo-European family of language, and is similar to Lithuanian.
