Tatarian composer Sofia Gubaidulina was born in Russia and became internationally famous. In the Soviet Union her music was forbidden, it was considered as „too modern” and „irresponsible”. State Choir „Latvija” has the honor to open the 11th International Sacred Music Festival by performance of „St. John’s Passion” – one of the most well-known and impressive pieces by Sofia Gubaidulina.

The opera “Joseph Is Fruitful Bough” by young and talented Latvian composer Ēriks Ešenvalds in year 2007 has received several most important musical and cultural awards in Latvia – the Great Music Award and Culture Award of the year from biggest daily newspaper “Diena”. Influential international magazine “Das Opernwelt” has named the performance of the State Choir “Latvija” in this piece among the best opera choirs of the year.

Contemporary and exciting accent of the International Sacred Music Festival. Stage is designed by young and famous Latvian artist Gints Gabrāns. The work talks about spiritual and sacred rituals of Latvians until arrival of first Christians in the late 11ht century and ends with “Pater Noster”.

Young and talented musician Rihards Zaļupe plays percussions in Latvian National Symphony Orchestra, he is composing music for marimba and playing jazz and pop-music in several projects. State Choir “Latvija” in a special charity concert in Dubulti during International Sacred Music Festival will perform several works by R. Zaļupe. Recently these pieces were also released in CD.

Composer Rihards Dubra has received Culture Award of the year from biggest daily newspaper “Diena”, which is very significant cultural award in Latvia. The premiere of this work took place in February 13, 2007 within a festival “Saxophonia”. The State Choir „Latvija” will perform this piece again during International Sacred Music Festival since there has been great interest from the audience.

At the closing concert of 11th International Sacred Music Festival there will be performed “Polish Requiem” written by Polish genius Krzysztof Penderecki. Whole world is celebrating Penderecki’s 75th anniversary this year. The composer also has written a music for opening ceremony of the Olympic Games in Beijing 2008. The State Choir “Latvija” is already acquainted with the music of Penderecki, and composer in person has appreciated the brilliant performance, high professionalism and beautiful sound of the choir.
