The Northern City, the capital of Finland, Helsinki reflects the diverse influences from both East and West through its architecture. The Swedish King Gustav Vasa originally built the city in 1550 and was later rebuilt as a Swedish fortress to counter threats from Russia. Today Helsinki boasts an impressive modern cultural and social life. Suomenlinna Fortress was a former strategic military shipyard now housing museums, galleries, restaurants and cafes. The Senate Square has various examples of neo-classical styles in the Lutheran Cathedral, the Palace of the Council of State and the University buildings. Upenski Cathedral shows the remains of the Russian occupation of Finland in the late 1800s and the Market Square with statues and venues for selling food and other goods.
