1,1 million inhabitants in Estonia speak the Estonian language, which is Finno-Ugric and closely related to Finnish.
Due to the country’s history and location the Estonian language has many loan words from German and Swedish languages, though adapted to the Estonian grammar. In Estonian language two consonant cannot be in the beginning of the word and therefore a German word for castle Schloss is loss in Estonian.
The Estonian language has no gender, but 14 case endings instead. All letters in a word are pronounced and the stress is on the first syllable.
English is slowly taking over Russian as the second most spoken language in Estonia. Many elderly prefers the German language over English.
